1042 Annual Returns:

As of tax year 2024, it is required to electronicallyfile the 1042 Annual return.

1042-S Express is unable to create the annual form, however, 1099Express does offer an online platform for e-Filing 1042 Annual returns.

For 2023 - 2025:

Paper Filing Limit:

• Beginning tax year 2023, taxpayers reporting more than ten 1042-S Forms must file electronically.
  Please see T.D. 9972 for more information.

Revised 1042-S Instructions for 2023:

For 2021:

Creating Copy A:

• Create the Copy A form on regular letter size blank paper with the 1042-S Express software

• Like last year, we expect approval from the IRS on our laser-created Copy A Forms on blank leter size paper created on the Users printer.
  Find the IRS Approval on our web site at 1099EXPRESS.com before you file. Filing on paper is not allowed for banks and financial institutions.
  The Maximum is 250 forms; filing more will result in a penalty.

• If you chose to paper file, you will need to also enclose a 1042-T (Transmittal) form along with your 1042-S forms.

• Get the IRS Transmittal Form here: www.IRS.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1042t.pdf The Transmittal is a "Fill-in" PDF form.
  Get the totals by clicking the Options Menu, then "Total All Records". Follow the directions on the back of Form 1042-T for where to mail,
  and how to complete Form 1042-T.

Printing Back of Copies B, C and D for Recipients:

• Beginning is FY 2021, 1042 Express software allows you to print on the FRONT and BACK side back side of each PAGE you mail to each payee. The BACK side
  contains Instructions in 3 languages and explanation of various "Codes", such as the "Income Code". This also saves paper.


• To print on the BACK, click on the File Menu, then "Page Setup". Then click the "Advanced" TAB, then check "DUPLEX". Then restart the program. At the "Printer Selection Window",
  you must also set your printer to "Print on Both Sides".

• Reminder: The IRS requires you to print and mail multiple pages for EACH payee. How many pages? Click here to decide and search this pdf for the word "copies":

• 1042 Express can print as many or as few Payee copies as you wish, but the IRS might require the Maximum. Read the above rules and search for "copies". The maximum is 3 pages front and back
  (6 pages) FOR EACH PAYEE. Being Copy B, C and D.


• We are not sure if Copy D for the states are required when mailing to a foreign address, or when mailed to a state with no state income tax such as Texas or Florida. We are not sure if the back side of
  Copies B, C, and D are required. Therefore you must make all decisions based on your own interpretation of the IRS document above.
