▬ Requesting an Extension of Time ▬

Requesting an Exstension of Time Instructions:

1. Click the Options tab, then select "Import Filers.txt to Extension File". This opens the Documents\1099Express\E20xx\Settings Folder.

2. Select and Open the file named FILERS.TXT (this creates an Extension of Time Source file, with all of last year's Filers/Clients).

3. Next Use the Options Menu then "Build Extension File". Upload the file created to the FIRE site as usual, the IRS will rename the file with the prefix EXTO (Instead of ORIG).

4. Make sure to check the File Status regularly to make sure the status is GOOD.

General Information

If there are 9 or less filers for the extension request, the IRS recommends to enter the requests manually. Use the FIRE.IRS.GOV web site interactively to enter extension requests manually and receive an immediate response. When using FIRE.IRS.GOV interactively, a TCC is not needed for this process.

Each IRS style file must be for only ONE type of extension request. It must be either for:

1.) An extension of time to file Copy A to the IRS.

2.) An extension of time to file Recipient copies. The first request for an extension of time to file to the IRS is granted automatically.

For more information see Publication 1220: Part D. Extensions of Time.
