▬ File Compression ▬

File Compression

  ◦ When IRS files are created with the Options/Build IRS file menu, 1099Express gives the user the option to compress the file.
  ◦ If you are filing to the IRS on a high speed internet connection, you probably don't need to compress your file.
  ◦ If you have a slow speed internet connection, and have less than 50 to 100 records, you probably still don't need to compress your IRS file.

Only compress your file if internet conection is very slow when connecting to the IRS (or reporting a very large number of payee records). Compressing the file will create another file with the .zip extension.

For example, if the file called IRS1.txt is created, then zipped, a second file called IRS1-txt.zip will be saved. Either files can be sent for e-Filing, but never send both. The IRS computer will know if the file that was sent is compressed, and will automatically take the correct action to expand it.

Since the IRS 750 byte records contain many blank fields, compression gives very good results. Compressed files are approximately 9 to 10 times smaller, and are transmitted much faster.

Compression is allowed only when filing electronically.
